Thanks for your thoughts, Marion, as a publishing industry veteran. I agree with your concerns about fair compensation for creators. The approximately $1.6 billion that public libraries are spending annually on content is much too little. I would actually like to see far more money available for libraries to devote to books and other items. The public interest is foremost on my mind, but compensation for creators is also why I’ve been advocating the creation of a multi-donor national library endowment funded by people who, working together, could easily afford it while supporting their own pet causes. While new business models would help, they won’t get too far without more money being available. Perhaps this is the big difference between LibraryEndowment.org’s vision and so many others that have preceded it.

New ways of compensating creators will have to prove themselves. So far, they have all failed, when it comes to music and books, at least.

Copyright is still the one that supports creators the best, and the one that supports the most creativity.

My own hope is that the library and publishing communities will rely less on litigation and more on new business models – including new ways of fairly compensating creators – while still respecting the doctrine of first sale.
